Blackout Blinds vs Standard Blinds: What’s the Difference?

When choosing new blinds for your home, one of the most common questions is whether to go for blackout blinds or standard blinds. Both are popular options, but they serve slightly different purposes depending on the room and what you need from your window coverings.

What Are Blackout Blinds?

Blackout blinds are designed to block out as much light as possible. They’re made from thick, opaque materials that stop sunlight from coming through the fabric, helping to keep rooms much darker during the day and night.

They are most commonly used in bedrooms, nurseries, and any space where light control is important. If you struggle with early morning sunlight or need to sleep during the day, blackout blinds are usually the best option. They can also help create a more comfortable environment for children at bedtime.

What Are Standard Blinds?

Standard blinds are designed to filter light rather than completely block it out. They still give you privacy, but they allow natural light to enter the room, helping to keep spaces bright and open.

They are a popular choice for living rooms, kitchens, dining areas, and offices. With a wide range of styles available such as roller, Venetian, and vertical blinds, they’re a flexible option that works well in most homes.

Light Control: The Main Difference

The key difference between blackout and standard blinds comes down to light control. Blackout blinds are made to reduce light as much as possible, although a small amount of light can still come in around the edges depending on the fit and installation.

Standard blinds give you more control over how much light enters the room. For example, Venetian blinds can be tilted to let in natural light while still maintaining privacy.

Energy Efficiency Benefits

Blackout blinds can also help with insulation. Because they are made from thicker materials, they can help reduce heat loss in the winter and limit heat coming in during the summer.

Standard blinds offer some level of insulation too, but not to the same extent due to their lighter materials and design.

Privacy in the Home

Both blackout and standard blinds offer good privacy, but blackout blinds provide full coverage when closed, making them ideal for bedrooms and bathrooms.

Standard blinds still provide privacy during the day and evening, although in some cases shadows may be visible from outside when lights are on inside the room.

Style and Finish

Standard blinds usually offer more choice when it comes to colours, textures, and finishes, making them easier to match with your interior style.

Blackout blinds are more function-led, but there are still plenty of modern styles available that can suit most homes without compromising on appearance.

Which Should You Choose?

It really comes down to how you use each room. If you need maximum light control and better sleep, blackout blinds are the better option. If you want a balance of natural light, privacy, and style, standard blinds are often the ideal choice.

In many homes, a mix of both works best — blackout blinds in bedrooms and standard blinds in living areas to get the best of both worlds.
